History of Government College Dharamsala
Government College Dharamsala was founded in 1912 in the scenic Kangra Valley under the Dhauladhar mountain range. It began as an Intermediate Arts College in 1926 and became a Degree College in 1948. Over the years, new subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Commerce, Economics, Geology, Hindi and English were introduced.
Postgraduate classes were later started, making the college one of the important educational institutions in Himachal Pradesh. The college expanded its infrastructure, library, hostels, sports facilities and academic departments over the decades.
The library grew into one of the largest college libraries in Himachal Pradesh, and the institution produced many distinguished alumni who served in administration, education, defence services and public life.
College Library Development
The college library started in 1926 with a small collection of books and gradually expanded over the years. By the 1970s and 1980s, it became one of the largest college libraries in Himachal Pradesh with thousands of books and research journals.
National Cadet Corps (NCC)
The NCC unit of the college started in 1935 and played an important role in student development, discipline and national service.
Sports and Games
Football, Cricket, Hockey, Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Table Tennis were major sports in the college. Girls also actively participated in sports activities.
